Approaching system to bring accumulating snowfall to CT 3/18-3/19/13

We are well into the month of March and only a few days away from the official beginning of Spring, however, that does not mean we can't get accumulating snowfall and that's exactly what we are looking at over the next few days.

A warm front will slowly approach the region from the southwest with several weak waves of low pressure riding along the front.  These weak waves, along with an area of high pressure to our north will allow for a very slow northward progression of the warm front and in fact, the front will never really fully blow through the region.  This will prevent the onset of warmer air from infiltrating the area and allow for much of the precipitation to be in the form of wintry precip, mainly being snow.

Snow will begin during the late evening hours of Monday and everyone will begin as snow, although can't rule out some mixing early on if the boundary layer temperatures are marginally warm enough coupled with lighter precip, however, as the precipitation becomes steadier, along with evaporational-cooling precipitation will quickly transfer over to all snow.

Travel conditions will quickly become hazardous as roads will become very slick and roads will continue to be quite hazardous and slick through the first half of Tuesday as accumulating snowfall on roadways and icy spots will make for slick conditions.  Except school delays and closings on Tuesday and late Monday PM activities may be cancelled as well.

Along with snowfall we will also have to deal with some freezing rain, sleet, and rain.  Late overnight Monday, warmer air will slowly work into the lower levels of the atmosphere, allowing for a transition from snow to freezing rain, sleet, and rain, especially across the CT coastline.  Inland, areas will deal with more of a sleet/freezing rain combo.  Freezing rain is not expected to be a major issue, however, as any ice accretions should be minimal but this will contribute to the hazardous travel conditions.

While the heaviest of the precipitation will b occurring during the evening/overnight hours of Monday, we will see on and off rain/snow showers throughout the day on Tuesday.

All in all this is what we should expect for snowfall accumulations:
